Welcome to Off-Campus StudyThe Office of Off-Campus Study (OCS) believes that academic opportunities to discover, learn about and engage with other citizens and cultures challenge our students to rethink the way they look at the world. Through academic coursework and internships both in the U.S. and abroad, the OCS helps students cultivate respect and understanding of self and of others, while learning the skills necessary to become global leaders. OCS serves Claremont McKenna College in five main roles: Student Advising: We maintain an extensive library of information, reports, and evaluations of the off-campus study programs that are available to CMC students, including CMC’s Washington Program and U.S. exchanges. Our goal is to help each student decide which program best meets individual academic, professional, and personal goals. Applications: We guide students through the process of applying to an off-campus program. We serve as the primary liaison to CMC’s faculty-led Off-Campus Study Committee, which has final approval over all off-campus study students and programs. Student Support: After they are accepted into an off-campus program, we support students with the additional paperwork and meetings necessary to prepare for departure. We host pre-departure meetings, preparing students for the unique cultural opportunities and challenges that arise from studying away from CMC, whether in Washington D.C. or in a foreign country. While studying off-campus, we monitor international and domestic news and security alerts daily in order to ensure students’ safety and maintain contact with students via e-mail and Skype to help resolve any academic or personal difficulties that may arise. Re-entry: We make ensure that students receive the necessary information about course pre-registration and on-campus housing before they return to CMC, and we review their evaluations and comments to ensure the continued high quality of our multiple programs. We will also continue to work with returned students to help them re-adjust to life at CMC as well as to prepare them for future international internships, careers, and graduate study. International Activities: We serve as a hub on campus for many internationally-focused activities and work to promote the importance of international education and cross-cultural dialogue. Students are encouraged to take advantage of our office’s resources in pursuit of future international goals.
